Our Roswell New Horizons Band has four musical groups, ranging
from large to small, each playing a different musical style.
There is a Roswell New Horizons musical group to accommodate
various venue sizes, from large to small. Organizations that
plan regular monthly or quarterly events can present each of
these Roswell New Horizons musical styles during the year so
their audiences can enjoy a new and different experience each
time.
1. A Pops band that plays medleys of Broadway and jazz tunes,
classical pieces and marches. More than 40 musicians play at
performances. This is a big sound for large venues.
2. A Jazz band, which plays the big band swing music that the
Glenn Miller, Dorsey, etc dance bands performed in the 30’s &
40’s. 16 musicians and a vocalist play at performances.
3. The Dixie Kings, which plays classical New Orleans Dixieland
music. Seven Kings play at performances.
4. The Saxey Seniors, a group of eight, a quintet of saxophone
players and a three-person rhythm section (keyboard, drum &
bass). The Saxeys play the same big band swing music as our
larger Jazz band described above. (Available after May 1, 2009)
The programs can run from 45 min to a couple hours, depending
upon the band and the event.
Our virtuosity is comparable to commercial bands. Most of our
players played in college bands. Many majored or minored in
music. Now that we’re seniors, we play for the fun of it, both
for ourselves and your audience. Like Marilyn Monroe once said
about herself, “All we want is to be wonderful”.
We are a non-profit organization, which was organized ten years
ago. Our players receive no remuneration. In fact, each of our
players pays monthly dues to cover the band’s regular expenses.
However performances generate additional out of pocket expense,
both for the preparation and the time at the venue (sheet music,
musical director, etc) for which the band requests a
contribution. The amount of the contribution varies from
situation to situation, but is always a small percentage of the
amount charged by comparable commercial bands.
